Kea parrot. Lifestyle and environment
Kea – a carnivorous parrots that prey on sheep
New research published May 20 in Current Biology suggests New Zealand’s intelligent kea parrots are ’emotionally contagious’ and can make other parrots ‘laugh’ and play when emitting a certain sound
The kea parrot (Nestor notabilis) has a “play call”, a vocalization which signals a playful state. Researchers used recorded play calls to test the effect on wild kea. Both juveniles and adults respond by engaging in play behaviour.

Thane Maynard talks about the baby Kea’s, cold weather parrots from New Zealand.
My Family went to WillowBank Wildlife Reserve in Christchurch NZ. Here they are hand feeding a Kea sunflower seeds. The Kea is the world’s only Alpine Parrot. Even in the wild these parrots show their intelligent, curious and cheeky nature by interacting with humans.

David Attenborough feature on Australian ABC of the New Zealand bird, the Kea
a destructive little bugger
Did I ever mention I want to get into nature documentaries? The Kea is one of NZ’s million or so flightless birds. These ones tried to make a fool of me every time I mentioned they were flightless.

Here are parrots that totally break the stereotypes! The Keas in New Zealand just love the snow and the cold, harsh mountain climate. To survive here, these mountain parrots have developed exceptional intelligence and resourcefulness. Watch these incredibly unique birds in action!
CCTV footage has been released in New Zealand of cheeky Kea’s caught on camera moving road cones and directing traffic into a different lane.
One more reason why you should visit New Zealand
Kea’s are famous for their insatiable curiosity and their multi-tool beak. This can be a problem for humans but it allows them to be the only parrot on earth that can live above the snowline.
