My gray cockatiel ~Spice~ misses his partner Dave. Dave past away last April 12 from accidentally eating avocado which is poisonous for birds…. Today, May 2, 2017 would have been Dave’s 3rd year with us since we got him 2014. He was about 2months old when we got him and Spice was of the same age as well. Both Spice and us are still coping with Dave’s passing.

Meet my cockatiel flock! Well, ok, maybe 1/3 of them. 🙂 In this video I will first use the tame and curious birds to wake up the curiosity of the rest of the flock to get them to come to me.
More about the topic:
I often hear that a flock of cockatiels “can not be tamed”. Or that a cockatiel who is adult and wild and flighted can not be tamed. Well, that is not true. 🙂 It just means you need a lot of patience. And some millet. 😉
I’m a fan of positive reinforcement. Shortly it means that the good or wanted behavior is rewarded to reinforce it. But it is much more: the ideology also includes that the birds are not scared or forced. Or actively (=in training terms, “positively”) punished. Forcing is pretty much a human making the bird to do something it doesn’t want to do by it’s own choice. Or that you make the bird feel so uncomfortable that it has to do something. (Like pushing the chest so that eventually the bird will step on to your finger – instead that the bird would take the step itself.)
And this is one of the key things in cockatiel flock training. The flock mirrors its members and their behavior. If you scare some of them, the rest will be more cautious, too.
Don’t go and just bring them to you or force them tocome to you: Make yourself so interesting that THEY _WANT_ TO COME TO YOU!
Use their curiosity! Use your tame birds to come to you first – and the less tame birds will follow. Use the parents to transfer the behavior to their chicks. And the more you do this, the more it reinforces the behavior. And ta-daa, you have a flock that you can share this kind of moments, becoming a happy bird tree. ;D
And, after you’ve gained their trust, you can start taking things even further and teach them more and more.
Send my greetings you your feathered friends! Enjoy your day!
(The video is a couple years old but thought I could share it now that I have an actual channel. 🙂 )

This cage is getting small for these two and they are getting a bigger home some time next month. I will update their new home. I have various brands of budgie foods and only use the ones without artificial flavors, colors, or preservatives. If organic foods are available, I will only use organic timothy hays and bird seeds. I incorporate both natural and plastic toys to keep them from boredom. I use a water bottle and a water cup so they can slowly figure out how to use a water bottle . Many birds have died because the owners have defective/clogged water bottles. Having many water sources prevent the likelihood of bird dying from dehydration. Birds are very sensitive to chemical in water such as chlorines. I use filtered water for birds. I give them fresh vegetables as well as natural spray millets, mineral rocks, himalayan salt, dried corns, and cuttle bones. There are various supplements on the market of various herbs, plants, and flowers I use to supplement my birds so they are not malnourished. They come in dehydrated tiny packages. I also added textured perches for them to trim their beaks and nails. Bath are given every other day with warm water. They love bells so I made a giant bell for them to ring all day. One of their favorite toys are the spinning bowling pins. They love basketball. I also add many natural toys such as basket for them to pick up nuts and sticks . They love sorting stuff out. They tend to like natural toys more. They love their wooden bridge and cozy basket . There used to be timothy hays in the basket but they tear them all down. I introduce new toys about every 2 days. Find something new and interesting to keep them happy and entertained. Both of my birds are boys so I don’t think they’ll be breeding any time soon. I keep them by the window so they can get a view outside and natural sunlight as well. The windows are never opened unsupervised as many birds can die from cold draft. They are kept covered at night with a blanket over their cage. When sunbathing, I always keep one side of the cage covered just case they get too hot, they can hide under the shade. There is also a warm snuggly fleece covered swing inside the cage in case they need to get away from the cold. Keep many options available in case of temperature changes so they won’t get overheated or freeze to death. I will get them a bigger cage within the next few months.
Thanks, WowsBox, for sending my monsters some awesome toys by OnePlus!

Now this is about being as creative as you want while making sure the bird toys are safe for your parrots. I’ll show you what I used, how I threw everything together and the end results. I hope this helps you create something fun for your parrots. You don’t have to do it the same way I did, just use this for ideas and see what you come up with! And remember it doesn’t have to look good, it just has to entertain your parrot.
Tools: hole puncher, small hand drill, scissors
Supplies: popsicle sticks, different size string, Pvc pipes, Wooden blocks, corn husks, streamers, Chinese finger traps, little straw hats, colorful tissue paper, bells, construction paper, wooden beads.
I prepared the corn husks the same way you would for food. Soak in warm water, rinse and then dry.
I’m sorry if some of the clips aren’t that great, this was hours and hours of footage. So it was a little hard putting it all together and sometimes I was tired and forgot to check the camera.
