Welcome to my community of parrot lovers! We believe in engaging with your birds and not caging them #engagednotcaged
I make these parrot vlogs to bring awareness to these intelligent and sensitive parrots in peoples homes that are forgotten about, abused and locked in cages forever, (often in basements and garages). My goal to show the world how smart and incredible these creatures are by entertaining, educating and sharing my parrots’ “Engaged Not Caged” life with the public and hopefully inspire you to do the same for your birds or encourage someone else who has birds to educate themselves! I wish we didn’t have birds in captivity but since we do, this is my way of helping the ones that don’t have a voice. So, come on this journey with me, my rescue parrots and other rescue animals and let us share and show everyone what our birds are made of. Let’s fight this fight together!

      1. I am always intrigued by your videos, and your empathy for animals!!! This damn planet needs more of you.

      2. Sorry to invade your comment section, but apparently you can no longer PM, and I'd love some of your expert advice on a super intriguing raven I met today while visiting SF, who was distressed and trying to talk with me. He (?) sat there talking to me for ages, coming up to my feet, often spreading his wings and ruffling his neck feathers. He was not shy at all. At some point, he walked up and very gently mouthed my shoe and my clothing with his beak, as if to pull me somewhere. He even tried to fly and perch on the bag I was carrying, but it caught me off guard. (I felt bad, and wanted to let him hop on me, but didn't.) He was gentle and non-agressive (didn't seem to be begging for food), and I'm my guesses are that:

      – He (or his partner or offspring) is either sick and is asking for help.  Or,
      – He's an escaped or cast-away pet.

Luckily, he can fly to the tops of buildings, and doesn't have any conspicuous injuries.  He's not quite full size, so I'm thinking he might be a juvenile? …I have a video of him, at my feet, talking up a storm to me.

He's been on the neighborhood block all day, approaching people, talking to anyone who will listen, and even trying to hop up stairs into people's houses. …I came back to check on him, and he recognized me ("Rock, Rock!" So cute!), and I gave him a hard-boiled egg (NS if feeding him isn't ideal?) and some water this eve (local workmen had fed him cookies and Twinkies, ugh).  I called Animal Control and ASPCA, but they were useless.

I'm worried for his safety, interacting so closely with humans. He's clearly trying to communicate, and I feel for the little guy.

      3. Sorry if this is the wrong place to message you! I'm not on social media, and this is all I know to do. …I love your videos, am super intrigued by the intelligence of birds, and you were the first person I thought to reach out to, as you are so knowledgable.

Do you have any ornithologist, behavioralist, and / or rescue connections in SF, or advice to help this little guy?

Even though I’ve never seen one in person, and even though I also have two African greys who are the loves of my life, cockatiels are my favorite birds. They are so cute and funny.

Merlin is acting like my timnah grey! I sit and talk and he says "Ya" all the time too! LOL He is agreeing with everything you say. I find they are "story tellers". I can ask Shadow "so what happened when I was gone?" I get noises and words and he tells the story. He plucks alot too. He was always handled well throughout his life. He was given to me when he was 6 which is the time they would leave their nest in the wild. So I don't think that affected him too much. I have spent years trying to research and figure out why. On day the vet said "well sometimes these birds just do this. Can you be ok with that?" To which I replied "Of course! I love shadow! I don't care if he gives himself a haircut!" He said "Good. Sometimes people cannot accept that." Shadow had happy eyes even at the vet! I never told him it was "ok, I understand" I think that greys have a very long time with their parents in the wild, 6 years. And there are many skills they need to learn beyond what other birds need. In captivity, they leave the breeder as soon as they are eating solid food sometimes. Also Shadow didn't know how to fly until my amazon taught him. No wonder he was insecure and anxious! They are smart enough to know "I don't have every skill I need to be a grown up bird."
